The Hungry God!
The Dime

Saw Sweeney Todd last night at the Bloomington Civic Theater. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I highly recommend it on the level of a good musical as well as the level of a good production. The boy is obsessed with the show, and last night didn't disappoint him. I love the interspersed narration chorus. At one point, it's a tragic, haunting tenor trio that struck me right to the core. The woman playing Mrs. Lovett did an awesome job in a role pratically defined by Angela Landsbury. Sweeney was hardcore passionate in a most successful way. The ending chorus just sent me over the edge, too beautiful and perfect. Most of the choreography was brilliantly simple, strong and pedestrian. Overall, high marks. Glad that the boy dragged me to see it last night, cause I was in no mood to make the initiative myself.

Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd
His skin was pale and his eye was odd
He shaved the faces of gentlemen
Who never thereafter were heard of again
He trod a path that few have trod
Did Sweeney Todd
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Swing your razor wide, Sweeney,
Hold it to the skies.
Freely flows the blood of
those who moralize.

I got to sing the solo part for a choral arrangement of this one time. Great stuff....

I think my favorite line from all the choral stuff is:

He seldom laughed but he often smiled

And seriously, the tenor trio got me excited.
